Norfolk Island
Central School Enviro. Club.
Norfolk Island is a sub-tropical, South Pacific Island 2000km east of
Australia.
Formed in isolation around 3 million years ago, it
developed its own very special ecosystem. Corals in Slaughter and Emily Bays are found
nowhere else on Earth.
Two hundred years of almost continuous human
development has left us with our own environmental problems.
In an attempt to find solutions to a number of
these concerns we have created the Norfolk Island Central School Enviro Club.
The Club
1998 the United Nations "Year of the
Oceans". And, here we are in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean.
All junior secondary students are preparing a long
term science assignment. The projects are designed to collect data of a marine nature. To
help build up an environmental inventory. Some of the assignments may be accessed in Projects
The management of the Enviro Club meets once a
week on a Monday evening. At the moment we are going through the processes of preparing a
management plan for Slaughter and Emily Bays.
The Club organizes Streamwatch Bug Testing, Sea
Week, Island Clean-ups, Environment Awareness lessons for Primary and Infants students,
"Guest Speaker" Evenings, Plays, Excursions to Phillip Island, SCUBA and Snorkel dives and Astronomy Evenings.
"Our Goal is to develop Marine Awareness and to have the Youth of
the Island take an active role in the Environmental Decision Making Processes."
